Farrakhan Takes To Streets For Peace In Chicago Neighborhoods
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan has started taking it to the streets in an appeal for peace in Chicago's neighborhoods.
As WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports, hundreds of smartly-dressed men of the Nation of Islam walked the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood Monday night, and the Chicago Sun-Times says Minister Farrakhan led them.
Farrakhan didn't want to speak about what he and the Fruit of Islam were doing, saying in statement that it's "time for action," the Sun-Times reported.
Farrakhan and his followers spread out throughout the Gresham police district, which extends from 75th Street on the north to 95th Street on the south, and from the Metra Electric District tracks on the east to Western Avenue on the west.
The Rev. Michael Pfleger of St. Sabina parish, which is located in the neighborhood, said what he saw were men interacting and saying to residents, "We can live in peace," the Sun-Times reported.
Another neighborhood march is scheduled for Monday in South Shore.
