Fans Go Nuts Outside Wrigley Field -- And Around Chicagoland -- As Cubs Win World Series
(CBS) -- The Chicago Cubs fended off the Cleveland Indians in Game 7 of the World Series at Progressive Field -- winning 8-7 in 10 innings and igniting a citywide celebration back home in Illinois.
Tens of thousands of fans thronged the exterior of Wrigley Field on Wednesday night. It was no walk in the park for them. The Cubs lost an early four-run lead and had to claw their way back in extra innings to win the ultimate baseball championship for the first time since 1908.
Although most fans appeared to be well-behaved, CBS 2's Charlie De Mar reports some partiers jumped on top of news live trucks, and crowd-control barriers were pushed down.
No information about arrests was available. Reports of looting in Wrigleyville appeared to have been false, according to the Chicago's Office of Emergency Management & Communications.
"So far, it's everything we've anticipated, and we have the right manpower in place," said Rich Guidice, OEMC First Deputy Director.
At Dick's Sporting Goods in Lincoln Park, fans swarmed the store to get brand-new Cubs World Series championship merchandise. The store planned to open at 6 a.m. Thursday to meet additional demand.
"Oh my God, I'm getting everything I can get my hands on," one Cubs fan told CBS 2's Sandra Torres.
Among the notables in Cleveland, on the field after the victory, was Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. He said the dramatic way in which the Cubs won the final game was appropriate.
"I'm like every other fan -- watching history being made," Emanuel told CBS 2's Dana Kozlov.
There was no immediate word on an official rally or parade to honor the Chicago Cubs.
