Family Sues Estate For Three-Vehicle Crash On South Side
CHICAGO (STMW) - A man and his daughter are suing the estate of a man who died after allegedly disobeying a stop sign and causing a three-vehicle crash in 2010 on the South Side.
Terry A. Harris and minor daughter Takiera R. Harris claim they were injured in an April 16, 2010, crash at South Hoyne Avenue and West 63rd Street that claimed the life of a motorist who disregarded a stop sign, according to a suit filed in Cook County Circuit Court.
The suit claims John Spann was driving north on Hoyne Avenue when he disregarded a stop sign at 63rd Street and crashed into a vehicle driven by Harris.
Police said the three-vehicle crash happened about 7:30 p.m. April 16, 2010, when a northbound Honda Accord collided with a Dodge Charger in the intersection. The Dodge then hit a Cadillac DeVille. One of the vehicles then crashed into a building, causing structural damage, police said.
Spann, 67, of the 6400 block of South Hoye Ave., died at 8:40 a.m. Aug. 28 at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. Two people in the Dodge and one in the Cadillac were initially hospitalized in good condition, police said.
The suit claims, among other things, Spann failed to stop at a stop sign, failed to yield and did not keep a proper lookout.
The two-count suit is seeking more than $100,000 from Pamela Marshall, the owner of the vehicle Spann was driving and Mari Marsh, personal representative of Spann's estate.
