Families Urged To Get Involved In Fire Safety

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CBS) -- State fire officials are asking families to get involved in fire safety this National Fire Prevention Week.

As WBBM Newsradio's Bob Conway reports, state Fire Marshal Larry Matkaitis asks that families talk about what to do in case of a fire and have an escape plan in place.

Among the recommendations are having a smoke alarm at every level of a home, in every room where someone sleeps, and within 15 feet of sleeping rooms.

Interconnected smoke alarms are also suggested. When one alarm sounds, all of them will go off.

Officials also emphasize that smoke alarms should be tested at least once a month, and batteries should be changed at least twice a year.
