Fallen NW Indiana Soldier Honored At Funeral
MUNSTER, Ind. (CBS) -- He made the ultimate sacrifice while serving his country. On Wednesday, northwest Indiana residents came together to say goodbye to Army Staff Sgt. David Nowaczyk, who was killed in Afghanistan last month.
Police cars, fire trucks, and American flags were just part of the tribute to a model husband, father, and soldier.
CBS 2's Marissa Bailey reports signs of respect were everywhere in Munster, Ind., on Wednesday for Nowaczyk's funeral.
Signs of respect were everywhere in Munster, Ind., for Nowaczyk's funeral -- including a tribute on the sign of a local gas station. Dozens of mourners lined up outside St. Thomas More Church, holding American flags.
"He's just a really good guy, all-around good guy. There's no words that really describe completely who he was," said Nowaczyk's cousin, Josh Weddington.
Nowaczyk, a resident of Dyer, Ind., joined the army in 2005, and he'd been to Afghanistan three times. He died on April 15, when his Humvee hit an improvised explosive device.
His cousin said the 32-year-old was meant for the military.
"I could tell this is really what we was made to do. He was really made to be a soldier, and he fulfilled his purpose very well," Weddington said.
It was a purpose that was clearly recognized by this small community.
So much so, many strangers came to pay their last respects.
Bob -- who didn't want to give his last name – said he didn't know Nowaczyk, but he and the community are proud of the late soldier.
"He gives his life. He has a family. He gives up time. And he does everything that other people don't do," Bob said. "I have a son in the service, that's another reason I'm here."
For one last time on Wednesday, Nowaczyk came home.
Nowaczyk is survived by his wife and two kids. His daughter Kylie is just one year old.
He was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart for his service.
