'Extremely Icy' Roads Cause 11-Car Pileup
SCHAUMBURG (STMW) -- Icy roads and freezing rain caused an 11-car pileup in northwest suburban Schaumburg Saturday night, according to Illinois State Police.
The accident happened about 11:06 p.m. on the Elgin-O'Hare Expressway near Gary Avenue, Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Bart Lamb said. Eleven cars were involved in the pileup.
"There was a short time where all of a sudden it turned into freezing rain and it was instant ice," Lamb said.
Two people suffered minor injuries but did not require transport to hospitals, Lamb said.
A mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow will continue overnight in the Chicago area, and "spotty freezing drizzle" is expected through Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
