Extra-Alarm Fire Rages In Riverwoods
UPDATED 05/01/12 6:23 a.m.
RIVERWOODS, Ill. (CBS) -- An extra-alarm fire shut down a busy road in Riverwoods early Tuesday.
As CBS 2's Kris Habermehl reports, the fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. in the large-estate home at 1080 Hiawatha Lane, just off Portwine Road.
Such homes are often constructed with large void spaces in the walls, underneath the attic and at the roofline, where firefighters were concentrating their efforts as of 6:15 a.m.
The fire was at second-alarm level during the 5 a.m. hour, and had been raised to a third alarm by 6 a.m.
The flames appeared to be out by the 6 a.m. hour, but white smoke still filled the second floor.
The house was a shambles on the inside, but the load-bearing walls and roofline seemed to be intact and salvageable.
No injuries were reported.
Fire equipment was staged along busy Riverwoods Road near the fire scene. Because of that, Riverwoods Road was shut down between Saunders and Portwine roads, and was to be out of service until further notice, Habermehl reported.
