Extra-Alarm Fire Destroys Southwest Side Auto Repair Shop
CHICAGO (CBS) -- An extra-alarm fire overnight destroyed an auto repair shop in the Southwest Side's Archer Heights neighborhood.
As CBS 2's Kris Habermehl reports, the fire broke out late Sunday night in the auto repair shop on the east side of the 5000 block of South Western Avenue.
A 2-11 alarm and a Level 1 Hazardous Materials response was called, as the building was full of petroleum products and other potentially dangerous chemicals.
At least one interior wall collapsed during the fire, officials said.
The fire took about an hour to put out. The No. 49 Western bus had to be rerouted while firefighters were on the scene.
The building had a truss roof, which is a collapse hazard and thus prevents firefighters from mounting an interior attack.
Firefighters had to rip down the interior wall to gain access to the interior.
The building was completely destroyed by the fire, and was left as a ruin with no roof or front wall.
No one was injured in the fire.
