Evergreen Park Students To Return To Class After Strike Ends
EVERGREEN PARK, Ill. (CBS) -- Students in Evergreen Park were headed back to school on Monday, after missing eight days of classes due to a teachers' strike.
The teachers and Evergreen Park School District 124 reached a tentative agreement early Friday, and hashed out the details later in the day.
The contract must be ratified by rank-and-file teachers, but District 124 officials said they're optimistic the deal will be approved.
About 150 teachers and 60 support staff at District 124 – which includes five elementary and junior high schools – had gone on strike on Oct. 2, after more than six months of negotiations. The previous contract expired on June 30.
Meantime, about 350 teachers and staff in North Shore School District 112, in Highwood and Highland Park, planned to rally Monday afternoon, amid efforts to reach a last-minute deal to avoid a strike there. The North Shore Education Association has threatened to go on strike on Tuesday if an agreement isn't reached by then.
