Evanston Shell Station Gives Away Gas For An Hour And A Half

EVANSTON, Ill. (CBS) -- For an hour and a half Wednesday morning, traffic was jam-packed at a Shell station in Evanston, where they were giving away gas for free.

As WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports, the giveaway was in progress from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. at the Shell station at 2494 Oakton St., just east of the North Shore Channel and the boundary with Skokie.

The station gave away 15 gallons of its new nitrogen-enriched gas, in order to familiarize motorists with the product. The oil company says the nitrogen helps prevent engines against "gunk."

One woman waited for an hour, and made it through the line just in the nick of time.

"I got in at 8:25, and they stopped the line at 8:30, so I was just under the wire," she said.

The normal advertised price at the service station is $4.49.
