Evanston Goes Easier On Minor Pot Possession

EVANSTON (CBS) -- Evanston is the latest to go easier on people caught with small amounts of marijuana.

Anyone caught with less than 10 grams will be ticketed, not arrested, by police in the north suburb.

The fines will range from $50 to $400. Before the new ordinance, police had a choice: issue a citation or charge them with possession under state law.

Charges would often lead to a criminal record, which makes it difficult for offenders to find jobs.

Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl says the new law will ensure violators can still find work and won't waste time of officers making arrests over a small amount of pot.
