ESPN Apologizes After Describing Jeremy Lin With Racial Slur
CHICAGO (CBS) - ESPN is apologizing for using a tasteless term to describe New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin. The racial slur appeared in an online headline, and was used in a SportsCenter segment late Friday.
The headline "Chink in the Armor" appeared on ESPN.com for over 30 minutes before it was removed. It was attached to a story about Lin's nine turnovers in the Knicks' 89-85 loss to the New Orleans Hornets. The same phrase was used by a SportsCenter anchor.
"There's no defense for the indefensible. All we can offer are our apologies, sincere though incalculably inadequate," Rob King, ESPN.com editor-in-chief, wrote in a tweet.
In a follow-up statement, ESPN said it is "taking steps to avoid this in the future."
