Esiason: Cowher Would Come Out Of Retirement To Coach Bears
(WSCR) Bears head coach Lovie Smith is under contract through the 2013 season, but that didn't stop NFL analyst Boomer Esiason from floating a coaching rumor around the city of Chicago.
Esiason joined The McNeil and Spiegel Show on Monday and expressed thoughts about his colleague from CBS Sports, former NFL head coach and Super Bowl champion Bill Cowher.
"The only two coaching spots that I think that he would ever come out of retirement for - one would be the New York Giants and the other would be the Chicago Bears, because he's that type of guy," Esiason said.

"Being so close to him over the last few years and watching him go through his total personal life upheaval with the death of his wife and watching how he's handled that with great dignity and professionalism, I'm just telling you, there is no dirt on that man. This guy is as good as he seems. He's everything that you'd expect him to be."
Though Smith has two seasons left on his contract, some have speculated new general manager Phil Emery may want to bring in a coach of his own after the 2012 season.
Esiason also discussed the additions of wide receivers Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery, and how the duo will perform under new offensive coordinator Mike Tice.
"To me, it really comes down to Mike Tice," Esiason said. "Is Mike Tice going to be stuck in tradition, running the ball and keeping it simple, or is he going to join the rest of the NFL and utilize the new weapons that they have? It's great to have weapons, but if your coaches and your coaching staff can't put those weapons in positions where they can win and actually go out and get a championship, then it doesn't really matter who you have.
"You gotta throw the ball, and you gotta throw the ball effectively. You gotta do it 25-35 times a game. It's not about running the ball 25 times and playing defense. I know you have a great running back there in Matt Forte, but if you want to get to the next level, your quarterback and your offense have gotta do it."
