Esiason: Coach Shouldn't Hire GM
(WSCR) After the firing of general manager Jerry Angelo, Bears president Ted Phillips made it clear that head coach Lovie Smith will have a say in who is hired to replace Angelo.
One NFL expert thinks that is a recipe for disaster.
"I never like the fact that you're hiring your boss," former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason told The McNeil and Spiegel Show. "That never works. Every GM that I've ever known, the moment he gets his job, he wants to hire his head coach, the guy that he believes works for him and his going to do what he says when it comes to players."

Once a GM is hired, though, his first duty will be to assess the Bears' divisional rivals and see what it will take to stop them.
"I know one thing," Esiason said," if I'm coming in there to be the general manager, there are two teams I'm looking at: Detroit and Green Bay. What do those two teams have? They have great offensive players. You have got to find athletes on that aging defense that are going to stop those offenses. Because I don't believe that they believe in Chicago that they're going to be able to score 34 points a game to beat the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers."
