Epstein Announcement Takes Backseat To World Series
(CBS) While the Red Sox and Cubs continue to negotiate compensation for Theo Epstein, neither team can announce anything until at least Friday now, according to the Chicago Tribune's Paul Sullivan.
MLB rules prevent major announcements from being made during the World Series, which starts Wednesday night in St. Louis. According to the report, the Cubs could request permission from Commissioner Bud Selig to make an announcement Friday during the first off day of the series, but that would require getting a deal done in time.
The Red Sox and Cubs appear to be at a stalemate in negotiations with neither team blinking. Boston is reportedly demanding that players be returned as compensation, most notably Matt Garza or Andrew Cashner. The Cubs would prefer to just send cash.
At this point, it's very possible that there won't be an announcement until after the World Series concludes.
