Woman Seriously Wounded In Englewood Shooting
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 25-year-old woman was shot four times Monday night while stopped at a red light in the Englewood neighborhood.
Jeniece Smiley was behind the wheel of a Nissan Altima headed west on 71st Street when she stopped at a stop light at Wentworth Avenue around 11:15 p.m.
Someone got out of another car, walked up to her, and fired several shots at the woman's car, striking in the head, shoulder, and hand.
Smiley lost control of the car, and drove into a grassy area off the road. She was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was in serious condition early Tuesday.
One neighbor said he thought Smiley might have been the victim when he saw the car on television, then his worst fears came true.
"It's crazy out here," he said.
The neighbor called Smiley a "very friendly, outgoing young lady," who worked hard and took care of her child.
"I just hope she gets better," he said.
Community activist Andrew Holmes said it has reached a point where people can't feel safe just driving through some parts of the city.
"It's getting to be unsafe that you get in your car, and all of a sudden you're driving down the street, and – whether you're going to work, or whether you're going home – then all of a sudden a car is pulling up on the side, arm extending out the window, discharge their weapon. You know, people are having permanent damage, sometimes losing their life," he said.
No one was in custody Tuesday morning.
