Englewood Residents: Scrap Yards Are Contributing To Decline
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Some Englewood neighborhood residents are asking that the city shut down scrap yards, saying they are contributing to the destruction of the community.
As WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports, a drive through some Chicago neighborhoods will reveal the effects of scrap metal scavenging – homes stripped of aluminum siding, windows, gutters and metal fences. Inside, the pipes, radiators and wiring are likewise stripped away and sold for scrap.
Some Englewood residents say they are seeing their community being taken apart piece by piece.
Englewood has a high number of foreclosures, and abandoned homes and apartment buildings.
One woman said she had to go to a scrap yard to buy back her own fence.
