Englewood Resident Touts Benefits Of Her Neighborhood
Resident Promotes 'What's Good In Englewood'
CHICAGO (CBS) -- An Englewood resident, sick of all the bad news about her neighborhood, has launched an effort to promote the good things about her South Side community.
WBBM Newsradio's Nancy Harty reports, eight years ago, Rashanah Baldwin had a reality check.
"I was feeding into the negativity, not caring about my community; in fact, volunteering in Lincoln Park, until I woke up one day, like, 'What am I doing?'" she said.
Baldwin – founder of Teamwork Englewood, and a former production assistant for WBBM Newsradio – decided to find a platform, and approached a college radio station about doing a weekly segment she calls "What's Good in Englewood."
"The residents are starting to see what's happening in the community," she said. "It's like they're in shock; like you revealed a present or a diamond to them."
Baldwin said, while she's had luck educating people who live in Englewood about the good that goes on there, it's the folks outside the neighborhood who have proved to be more of a challenge – one the 30-year-old said she's up for.
