15-year-old found shot dead inside home on Chicago's South Side
CHICAGO (CBS) — A 15-year-old boy was found shot and killed inside a home in Englewood Tuesday morning.
Just after 11:30 a.m., the teen was found with a gunshot wound to the head at a home in the 6700 block of South Parnell Avenue. Police said the victim was pronounced dead on the scene.
According to unconfirmed police dispatch reports, the boy's mother found him dead inside the home.
"Caller stated she came home and believed her 15-year-old son passed away. There's a lot of blood inside the unit," a dispatcher said.
The victim was identified as Kenwon Van Pelt.
CBS News Chicago spoke to a family member who would only say, through tears, "That was my stepson."
While police have not officially said if the shot that killed the boy was fired from inside or outside the building, nearly a dozen shell casings were visible in the parking lot outside the building after the boy was found dead, and police had cordoned off the parking lot with red crime scene tape.
Ald. William Hall (6th) said he lives nearby.
"Today, our hearts are shattered. The senseless killing of a 15-year-old child in Englewood is a pain that words cannot fully capture," Hall said in a statement. "This was someone's son, someone's brother, someone's whole world—and now, their family is left to endure an unimaginable loss."
Police said Area 1 detectives were conducting a homicide investigation.
The boy was the second teen shot and killed inside a home in Chicago in roughly 12 hours.
Just after 10:20 p.m. Monday, a 14-year-old boy was found shot and killed inside a home in Little Village. Police said the boy was shot in the chest in an apartment building in the 2200 block of South Christiana Avenue.
No arrests have been made in either shooting, and police have not noted any connection between the two deaths.
