Engineers Change Course On Plan To Remove Trees From NW Side Park
CHICAGO (CBS) -- After complaints and pressure from residents and politicians on the Northwest Side, the Army Corps of Engineers has changed its plan to take out hundreds of trees in Horner Park and along the river.
Attorney General Lisa Madigan was just one of the Northwest Side residents who objected to the Corps of Engineers' plan to remove hundreds of trees between Irving Park Road and Montrose - near Horner Park.
There was a contentious community meeting - then a walk-through tour with the Corps.
Now Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Lovell of the Corps of Engineers says the corps has changed its plan.
"Many trees were set to be removed in the total project, and we will remove a significant number of trees. But that number has been reduced."
Lieutenant Colonel Lovell says he thinks residents now "have a lot to be happy about."
