Engine Fire On Amtrak Train From Chicago
Train Was Headed To New York; Engine Caught Fire In Ohio
ELYRIA, Ohio (CBS) -- The lead engine caught fire Wednesday morning on an Amtrak train headed from Chicago to New York, as it approached a station in northern Ohio.
The fire broke out just before 5 a.m. Central Time Wednesday. Three engineers on the locomotive for the Lake Shore Limited train exited safely beforehand, and the 128 passengers were never in danger, according to Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham.
Firefighters responded to the station in Elyria, Ohio, and the fire was extinguished. The cause of the fire is not known, according to Graham.
To continue on its way to New York, the train would have to wait for the arrival of a replacement locomotive, from a freight train. It was not certain how long passengers would be delayed, Graham said.
The 959-mile Lake Shore Limited route starts at Union Station. Some trains end at New York's Penn Station, while others run to Boston.
