Endless Rain Brings Flooding To Many Areas
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Sure enough, another inch of rain fell on the already-wet Chicago area Monday night and Tuesday morning, and widespread flooding has been reported.
CBS 2 Meteorologist Megan Glaros says the rain will move out of the area Tuesday, and a peek of sunshine might even be on the horizon before sunset.
But a flood warning continues for several rivers, particularly in Lake County, Ill., and Lake County. Ind.
Either nearing or beyond flood stage are the Illinois River at Ottawa, the Des Plaines River at Lincolnshire, the Illinois River at LaSalle, the Iroquois River at Iroquois, the Kankakee River at Dunns Bridge in Porter County, Ind., near Kouts, Ind., and near Shelby, Ind., and Sugar Creek in Milford, Ind.
All day Monday in Lincolnshire, the Des Plaines was flirting just above and below flood stage. With more rain to come at that point, residents were coming to terms with the possibility of flooding.
The many creeks of Elgin are also areas of concern. In a news release, the Elgin Office of Emergency Management warns that those in flood-prone areas may be evacuated.
The office has found creek and river levels to be above normal. Poplar Creek, for example, is 2.5 feet over normal levels, and with the ground saturated, the probability of flooding is high, Elgin Office of Emergency Management coordinator Karen Flanagan said in the release.
"Residents in all of the city's low-lying areas should be prepared to find emergency shelter if necessary and stay informed," Flanagan said in the release.
The city of Chicago has not been spared either. As the morning rush got underway, high standing water was reported on the right lane of the outbound Kennedy Expressway near Central Avenue, along the main route to O'Hare International Airport.
Glaros says as the day goes on, a low-pressure system far to the north of Chicago will bring mild temperatures from the south. The temperatures are expected to top out in the upper 60s, and areas to the south such as Peru and Kankakee could see the 70s.
But the rain will be back when Wednesday comes around, and the high tops out at only 55. The only day this week that appears sure to be dry is Friday.
