Endangered Gorilla Born At Lincoln Park Zoo
CHICAGO (CBS) -- There's a new baby — and a new mother — at the Lincoln Park Zoo.
Bana, 15, a western lowland gorilla and first-time mother, gave birth to a baby girl on Nov. 16, zoo officials announced Monday. The newborn is the first of the endangered species to be born at the zoo since 2005.
Dad Kwan, a 22-year-old silverback gorilla, has stayed "protectively close" to the mother and child, a news release said, adding that the male "seems proud of his new offspring." The baby, which has yet to be named, is the 49th gorilla born at the zoo.
The Regenstein Center for African Apes has been closed to the public since the birth, but reopens to the public at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
