CHICAGO (CBS) -- Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined Senator Dick Durbin and military dignitaries at Soldier Field thanking veterans assembled for their service to the nation.
Emanuel: Vets 'Should Never Struggle To Find A Home'
Speaking to some 500 veterans from various branches of the service, Emanuel said his next stop was ground breaking for a veterans' shelter on the South Side in the Gresham neighborhood.
"Hero is the only name that should apply to our veterans, never homeless. If you fought for your homeland, you should never struggle to find a home," said Emanuel.
Emanuel said the country has an obligation to repay veterans' service with housing and a job.
He also took the occasion to point out Chicago is the only city with high schools representing the tradition of each of four service branches.
An Air Force honor guard in camouflage fired off three volleys in a salute to veterans and an honor guard placed a wreath on the statue of the World War I doughboy, currently located under the stands in the Southwest corner of the field.
