Emanuel Going Ahead With Trip To Paris
(CBS) – Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel will travel to Paris next month, in part to show solidarity with the people of France.
The previously scheduled trip is for an International Mayor's Conference on Climate Change. On Monday, Emanuel said it's important to follow through on the commitment, in light of Friday's terror attacks.
"Not only is climate change important, as cities meet that challenge head-on, but also to show our commitment that these vicious and vile acts will not break us apart but bring us together," Emanuel said as he visited the French Consulate in Chicago.
Emanuel placed flowers in memory of the more than 100 people murdered in Paris. Then he observed a moment of silence, before a private meeting with a grateful French Consul General, CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine reports.
ISIS has claimed responsibility for the coordinated attacks in Paris.
Emanuel was reluctant to discuss, in detail, security measures being taken in Chicago. He said he was on the phone with a variety of public-safety officials over the weekend.
