Emanuel Downplays Friendship With Rauner
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Mayor Rahm Emanuel appeared to be trying to put some distance between himself and his good friend Bruce Rauner, the Republican nominee for governor.
WBBM Newsradio Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports a newspaper photo over the weekend showed Emanuel and Rauner together at Rauner's ranch in Montana in 2010, carrying bottles of wine from a very expensive wine club.
Asked about the picture, Emanuel played it down.
"Voters will decide whether to make a question about Bruce Rauner's membership in a club or not," Emanuel said. "I'm more interested not in what he does privately, but his public policy positions. I just signed something about the minimum wage. Bruce Rauner doesn't agree with an increase in the minimum wage."
Further distancing himself from Rauner, the mayor said he doesn't agree with Rauner's budget plan, which Emanuel said would have a serious impact on education funding.
Gov. Pat Quinn's campaign has been making much of Rauner's wealth and spending. Emanuel wouldn't say anything about that, though he did say he supports Quinn, a fellow Democrat, in the race for governor.
