Emanuel Demands Review Of City Travel, Mileage Reimbursements
CHICAGO (CBS) -- As he looks to cut city expenses, Mayor Rahm Emanuel is ordering an audit of mileage and travel reimbursement policies for all city agencies.
As WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports, earlier this summer, the mayor ordered a review of credit card policies, which led to stricter procedures. City credit cards were taken away from nearly 500 employees, leaving only 30 cards for top executives only.

Emanuel also required all reimbursements to be posted online, and eliminated petty cash funds.
Now, the mayor is telling city Comptroller Amer Ahmad to review all travel and mileage reimbursement policies as well.
The audit, which is to be on the mayor's desk in 30 days, will compare the city's policies with others in the public and private sectors, and look for ways to end possible abuses.
"We must continue to ensure accountability, efficiency and transparency across city government," Mayor Emanuel said in a Monday morning news release. "Every department and sister agency must be diligent and responsible with its stewardship of taxpayer dollars and use all funds in the most effective way possible."
In addition, the mayor has sent a memo to all city department heads, notifying them that travel and mileage reimbursements are being suspended.
