Elgin Teenager Dies In Kane County Crash
BURLINGTON, Ill. (STMW) -- A 17-year-old Elgin boy is dead after a one-vehicle crash near Burlington in Kane County.
Kane County Sheriff's deputies responded at 12:50 a.m. to a crash at Plank Road, west of Engel Road, just west of Burlington, according to a sheriff's release.
A 2007 Lincoln MKZ was speeding west when it crossed the center line and left the roadway on the south side of Plank Road, the release said. The Lincoln rolled several times before it struck a tree.
Lawrence Echols, 17, of Elgin, a passenger in the back seat, was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said. The second backseat passenger, from Elgin, was airlifted to Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with non-life threatening injuries. Both back seat passengers were extricated from the vehicle.
The driver and the front seat passenger, both from Elgin, fled the crash on foot, the release said. A canine and air search began for the victims who were found at 10:30 a.m. at Sherman Hospital in Elgin. They told enforcement officials that they walked to the hospital after the crash.
No charges have been filed and the crash remains under investigation by the Kane County Sheriff's Office and Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team.
Plank Road between Engel and County Line roads was closed until 11 a.m.
