Elgin Schools To Lay Off Nearly 200 People

ELGIN, Ill. (CBS) -- It's the time of year dreaded by suburban school districts – when RIFs, or reductions In force, are announced.

As WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports, in Elgin-area School District U-46 – the second-largest school district in Illinois – the board voted to lay off a total of 178 people for the next school year. That includes 77 teachers.

The school board voted 6-0 on the layoff plan, with one board member absent, the Daily Herald reported.

Officials tell the Daily Herald the cuts are not budget-related. They have to do with not being sure what the enrollment next year will be, and how many teachers and support staff will be needed.

The Daily Herald says it is likely that many of those who are now being told that their jobs are now gone will likely be re-hired once class-size needs are figured out.

It is also possible that there will be more layoffs announced by the U-46 Board at its next meeting, the Daily Herald reported.

The Daily Herald cut 324 teachers and staff last year. In 2010, the district approved 1,177 job cuts as a deficit ballooned to $40 million.
