Elgin Man Charged In Jewelry Store Burglary
ELGIN, Ill. (STMW) -- A man was arrested Sunday for allegedly robbing a jewelry store Friday in northwest suburban Elgin, and police are looking into the possibility that he may have been involved in other burglaries in the area.
The burglary occurred overnight Friday at the Gold Estates, 266 N. State Street, according to an Elgin police release. An employee arriving to work Saturday found the shop's rear door had been forced open and called police.
David Vidak, of the 200 block of Villa Street in Elgin, was arrested Sunday at his home after a store manager reviewing surveillance video recognized him as a previous customer, the release said.
Police executed a search warrant at Vidak's home and discovered several items that linked him to the burglary, such as coins, jewelry and pocket watches.
"Arrests like these are important as Elgin police continue efforts to reduce burglaries," said Elgin Police Chief Jeff Swoboda. "Overall crime is down nearly 13 percent, but Elgin burglaries are up and we're working hard to stem that tide. Residents witnessing suspicious activity should call police immediately."
Vidak was charged with one felony count of burglary, which carries a four- to 10- year sentence, the release said. Vidak was out on bond on at the time of the offense.
He was recently charged with possession of stolen property stemming from another theft case in Wisconsin, the release said. Elgin police are investigating Vidak's possible involvement with other area burglaries.
