Elementary School Student Brings Gun To School
HIGHLAND, Ind. (CBS) -- A Highland elementary school student said he brought an unloaded gun to Warren Elementary School on Tuesday on a dare.
School Town of Highland Superintendent Michael Boskovich said Wednesday the student "is no longer in attendance," at the school but would not say whether the boy had been expelled or what grade he was in.
He said three boys told their bus driver the student had a gun as they exited the bus Tuesday afternoon.
The bus driver alerted school officials who contacted Highland police who went to the student's home. The student admitted bringing the gun to school. It's believed the weapon belongs to one of his parents.
"At no time were students or staff in danger," Boskovich said.
The school district sent out an automated message to parents alerting them of the incident, Boskovich said.
Last week in Gary, school officials expelled a third-grade boy after a toy gun was discovered in his backpack at the Banneker Achievement Academy on Nov. 8.
Gary Community School Corp. spokeswoman Charmella Greer said the boy showed the gun to some friends and was playing with it.
"It was a toy gun, but they treated it as if it was a real gun," Greer of the punishment meted out by school officials.
