Elderly Woman Who Died In Auburn-Gresham Is Season's 6th Cold Death In Cook County
CHICAGO (STMW) -- An 87-year-old woman found Saturday morning in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood on the South Side died partly due to hypothermia, marking Cook County's sixth cold-related death of the season.
Bernice Green was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:23 a.m. near her home in the 8100 block of South Morgan Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The low temperature at Midway Airport early Saturday was 27 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
A Sunday autopsy found she died of a subdural hematoma from a fall, with heart disease and hypothermia due to cold exposure listed as secondary causes. Her death was ruled an accident.
Chicago Police did not have more details on the incident.
Last winter, 26 people died at least partly from cold exposure in Cook County, according to the medical examiner's office. During the 2013-14 season, there were 32 confirmed cold-related deaths.
