Elderly Woman Dies After Northwest Side Fire

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An elderly Chicago woman died early Saturday morning, several hours after she was pulled from a fire at her Northwest Side home.
A fire broke out at 6616 N. Onarga Av. at about 6:45 p.m. Friday, according to the Chicago Fire Department. It started in a bedroom on the first floor of the home.
Firefighters pulled Bernadine Venn, 78, from the home. She was suffering from smoke inhalation and was taken in critical condition to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
The woman was later transferred to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where she was pronounced dead at 4:23 a.m. Saturday, officials said.
No one else was injured in the fire, which was put out at 7:15 p.m.
Knight said firefighters went out to canvass the area of the fire at 1 p.m., handing out free smoke detectors and safety information.
