Elderly Man Dies After Assault, Attempted Robbery In Chatham
(STMW) -- Police say an 88-year-old man died after two people assaulted and attempted to rob him last week in the South Side Chatham neighborhood.
On Sept. 25 at 4:53 a.m., Arthur Hearn was walking in the 8500 block of South Cottage Grove when a man and a woman approached and pushed him down, police said.
The pair went through his pockets, but police said it was unclear whether they took anything. Both then ran off.
It wasn't known who alerted authorities, but Hearn was eventually taken to Jackson Park Hospital, then transferred to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, police said. He was pronounced dead at 5:50 p.m. Sunday at Horizon Hospice, the medical examiner's office said.
Hearn, of the 8400 block of South Langley, died of head injuries from the assault, according to an autopsy performed Monday. His death was ruled a homicide.
The man suspected of pushing Hearn is described to be between 20 and 30 years old, while the woman is described being 25 to 30.
