5 People Killed In 2 Wrong-Way Crashes On Eisenhower Expressway
CHICAGO (CBS)-- Five people died in two head-on crashes on the Eisenhower Expressway Monday morning.
One of the crashes happened around 1:15 a.m. in west suburban Forest Park. Illinois State Police said a 2004 Honda sedan was headed west in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 290 near Des Plaines Avenue, when it collided with a 2015 Infiniti sedan headed east.
The cars caught fire due to the impact of the crash, and heavy smoke could be seen around the area of the crash.
Police said the woman driving the Honda and the 21-year-old woman driving the Infiniti were killed in the crash. A 26-year-old man, who was a passenger in the Infiniti, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
All eastbound lanes of the Eisenhower were shut down at Harlem after the crash, but reopened by 6:15 a.m.
A second incident left three people dead on I-290 near the Byrne Interchange in Chicago.
Illinois State Police said a 2016 Land Rover was headed west in the eastbound lanes of the Eisenhower just east of the Interstate 90/94 split, when it crashed into a 2017 Ford Edge headed east in the right lane.
The Ford Edge lost control and spun out into the left lane, crashing into a Black Ford Escape, according to police. All three vehicles became fully engulfed in flames due to the crash.
Three people were killed in the crash, including the driver of the Land Rover, the 51-year-old man driving the Ford Edge, and a 24-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Ford Edge.
Three people in the Ford Escape suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The eastbound exit from I-290 to Congress Expressway was closed to traffic for more than four hours after the crash, but has since reopened.
