Man charged in shooting that wounded 2 undercover CPD officers in 2017
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man has been charged in a shooting that wounded two undercover Chicago police officers in the Back of the Yards neighborhood in 2017.
Edgar Barron, 25, is charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, according to Cook County court records. At his first court appearance on Saturday, a judge ordered him held at Cook County Jail while he awaits trial.
Police said he was identified as one of the two men who opened fire on two police officers on May 2, 2017, in the 1500 block of West 43rd Street.
Cook County prosecutors said Barron was the passenger in a vehicle with 26-year-old Angel Gomez, when Barron opened fire on the two officers. One of the officers suffered gunshot wounds, and the other suffered cuts.
Barron fled the United States to avoid prosecution after the shooting, according to prosecutors. Police said he was arrested Thursday in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, about a mile away from the scene of the shooting.
It was not immediately clear when Barron returned to the U.S.
Gomez was arrested soon after the shooting, and was charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated battery, and four counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm.
In 2021, Gomez pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm, and was sentenced to five years in prison. After being given credit for the nearly five years he'd already served in custody at the time, his sentence was deemed to be complete.
