Driver dies in crash on Chicago area expressway
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A driver was killed Tuesday morning in a crash on the Edens Expressway, which left a massive hole in the car's windshield above the driver's seat, and not much other damage.
Illinois State Police were investigating what caused a driver to hit a concrete barrier dividing the two sides of Interstate 94 near the Winnetka Road bridge around 7:10 a.m.
The car was the only vehicle involved in the crash. A gaping hole was visible in the driver's side of the front windshield. The driver's side mirror and front driver's side window also appeared to be damaged.
Police said the gray Toyota Rav 4 was headed north on the Edens Expressway when it hit the concrete barrier dividing the northbound lanes from the southbound lanes.
The driver was the only person in the car at the time of the crash.
According to police dispatch reports, the driver was bleeding from a large hole in his neck after the crash.
The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Police have not said what caused the windshield to shatter – whether it was possibly something that fell from an overpass, or debris from another vehicle.
The driver has not been identified. Illinois State Police towed away the vehicle after the crash as they continue their investigation.
