Durbin: Obama Was Within Rights To Speak Up About Supreme Court

CHICAGO (CBS) -- U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) is defending President Barack Obama's remarks on the U.S. Supreme Court and health care.

As WBBM Newsradio's John Cody reports, President Obama drew some sharp criticism by saying he is confident the Supreme Court would not take the extraordinary step of overturning the health care law.

Helping field the criticism is Durbin, who says Obama's remarks are well within limits.

"For someone to say something critical about a Supreme Court argument or decision happens to be part of this country that we live in," Durbin said. "There are countries where you can't be critical of any branch of government, or you end up in jail. Thank God America's not one of them."

Durbin, speaking earlier in the week, said the nice thing about a democracy is that people can speak up, as did the President about Supreme Court deliberations on affordable health care.
