Duo Nabbed For Robbing Off-Duty Cop, Carjacking Second Victim
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Two men have been charged with robbing an off-duty Chicago Police officer of his badge and wallet early Wednesday on the Far South Side, then carjacking another man shortly afterwards.
Van Robinson, 17, of the 100 block of East 74th Street; and Darrell Magee, 20, of the 6800 block of South Indiana Avenue, are each charged with aggravated vehicular highjacking while armed with a firearm, and two counts of armed robbery with a firearm, according to police.
Magee was also cited with several traffic violations, including blowing a red light and going the wrong direction on a one-way street, a release from police said.
The off-duty officer was robbed at gunpoint of his wallet, cell phone and police badge about 1 a.m. Wednesday in the 9700 block of South Wentworth Avenue in the Roseland neighborhood, police said. The officer was not harmed.
The next robbery happened about 3 a.m. in the 7100 block of South Harvard Avenue, when the pair took a vehicle from a 45-year-old man at gunpoint, according to police.
Officers patrolling near the 5500 block of South Western Avenue early Wednesday spotted the stolen car. They tried to stop it, but the suspects refused to stop, eventually crashing in the 5700 block of South Claremont, where they fled on foot, but were soon captured, the release said.
After the arrests, police recovered the officer's star on the street, according to News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli. The officer's other personal property, including his cell phone, were also recovered.
Calumet Area detectives are investigating.
