U Of I Student From Lake In The Hills Killed In Hit-And-Run In Urbana
URBANA, Ill. (CBS) -- A University of Illinois student from north suburban Lake In The Hills was killed in an apparent hit-and-run in Urbana overnight.
Urbana police said, around 11:50 p.m. Friday, officers responded to a call of a man down in the 200 block of West University Avenue.
According to the Champaign County coroner's office, the victim was identified as 22-year-old Anthony Pauls. A friend of Paul's said he was an engineering major at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Pauls was pronounced dead at 7:54 a.m. Saturday at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.
Police said Pauls had been struck by a hit-and-run driver.
Around the same time Pauls was found laying in the street, an Urbana police officer located and stopped a vehicle driving in the area with heavy damage.
The driver, identified as 20-year-old Albert Fleming, of Champaign, was arrested on preliminary charges of driving under the influence, leaving the scene of a fatal accident, and other traffic charges. He was being held at the Champaign County jail.
The case remained under investigation Saturday afternoon.
