Drunk Wrong-Way Driver Nearly Hits State Trooper
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A wrong-way driver was arrested early Monday morning after nearly hitting a state trooper making a traffic stop on the Kennedy Expressway.
Police said it appeared the driver was drunk.
Around 1:45 a.m., an Illinois State Police trooper was making a traffic stop on the northbound Kennedy Expressway at Kostner Avenue, when the trooper saw the headlights of an oncoming vehicle heading in the wrong direction.
Police said the wrong-way driver swerved onto the shoulder, nearly hitting the trooper's squad car, which had its emergency lights activated at the time.
The trooper made a U-turn and pulled over the wrong way driver about an eighth of a mile away. The driver, whose name has not been released, was arrested and charged with DUI, wrong-way driving, not wearing a seatbelt, driving without insurance, and failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.
No one was hurt during the incident, police said.
The driver who had been pulled over in the initial traffic stop was not ticketed.
