Drug Busts Net $1 Million, 2 Charged
CHICAGO (STMW) - Two men are in custody after police seized nearly $1 million in cocaine and cannabis Wednesday during two separate South Side drug busts.
The first arrest came after police searched a garage in the 3600 block of South Archer Avenue on information that it was being used to conduct drug transactions, according to a police News Affairs release. Narcotics officers and a police dog found more than 114 pounds of marijuana packed into several large duffel bags in the garage.
Saul Alonzo, 21, of Pacaso, Washington, was charged with one count of cannabis trafficking, a Class X felony, in connection with that incident, the release said.
About 7:30 p.m., police conducting a separate investigation seized about 2 kilograms of cocaine during a traffic stop in the 4400 block of South Whipple Street, the release said. Police made the stop after they learned a suspect in the car, 52-year-old Lorenzo Castillo of San Luis Potosi in Mexico, had a large amount of cocaine with him.
Castillo was charged with one possessing more than 900 grams of cocaine, a class 1 felony, according to the release.
The drugs had a combined estimated street value of more than $1 million dollars, according to the release.
