Driver Questioned After Fatal Edgewater Crash
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police were questioning the driver of a car that plowed into several parked cars and a CTA bus in the Edgewater neighborhood on Wednesday, killing a 71-year-old man who was putting groceries in his trunk.
Frank Kiley, 71, was loading groceries in the back of his car near Sheridan Road and Balmoral Avenue, when a car trying to go around a CTA bus plowed into two or three parked cars at a high rate of speed.
Witnesses said a red Ford was speeding and blew a red light before hitting the bus and parked cars, pinning Kiley between two vehicles. Kiley was pronounced dead at the scene.
Robert Cash was working at a pizza restaurant nearby when he saw the gruesome crash.
"The red car blew through the red light at a very fast speed, 50, 60 miles-per-hour, and hit the back of the guy's car with him in between it hit him so hard it hit the next three parked cars in front of him," he said.
Kiley apparently was carrying groceries to his car from the Care For Real food pantry at the time.
Three other people were injured in the crash, and were taken to hospitals.
Cash said he was still shaking two hours after seeing the wreck.
People who live in the neighborhood said drivers often go much too fast on Sheridan.
"That's always happening in this area, they're always trying to go around the bus," said Fidel Medrano.
Police said the driver was in custody, and charges were pending Thursday morning.
Sources said investigators were reviewing video from security cameras on the bus.
