Driver Hurt When Car Strikes Suburban Church Twice
ELGIN, Ill. (STMW) - An 18-year-old northwest suburban Elgin woman was injured Monday afternoon when her car crashed twice into the side of a downtown church, police reported.
The woman, whose identity was not released as of Monday evening, sustained injuries not life-threatening in the single-car accident and likely will be charged with reckless driving, police spokeswoman Sue Olafson said.
The crash occurred about 1:25 p.m. when the woman's 2009 Scion went into the side of Vineyard Church, 220 Division St., Olafson said.
"She hit the church twice — hit it and spun, then hit it again," Olafson said.
The woman was taken to Provena Saint Joseph Hospital, Olafson said.
There were no passengers in the vehicle, and no other cars were involved in the accident, Olafson said.
No one inside the church was injured; the red brick building appeared to have sustained damage only to a few basement-level windows, according to witnesses.
The crash's cause was under investigation, according to Olafson.
