CHICAGO (STMW) - A man is dead after the car he was driving collided with a CTA bus on the Northwest Side Saturday morning.
The crash happened about 6:10 a.m. at Diversey and Albany avenues, according to police.
The CTA No. 76 Diversey bus was eastbound on Diversey when a car that was southbound on Albany turned into the path of the bus, CTA spokesman Steve Mayberry said. The 2009 Toyota Scion now westbound in the eastbound lanes, struck the bus, police said.
The driver of the car, who had to be cut out of the wreckage, was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition, according to Fire Media Affairs. The man, believed to be 25 years old, was later pronounced dead at Illinois Masonic, a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.
There were eight passengers on the bus, and all refused treatment by paramedics, police said. Neither the bus operator nor any passengers on the bus were injured, Mayberry said.
The bus was taken to the CTA's Chicago Avenue garage and the No. 76 Diversey buses were rerouted around that area for two hours and 45 minutes.
By about 10 a.m. the reroute was over and service on the route was back to normal.
