Drew Peterson, In Shackles, Allowed To Attend Private Visitation For His Mother
DARIEN, Ill. (CBS) – Convicted wife killer Drew Peterson was allowed outside the Will County Jail for a brief period today to pay final respects to his mother at a Darien funeral home.
A jury last month convicted Peterson of murdering his third wife, Kathleen Savio, in 2004. The former Bolingbrook police sergeant is awaiting sentencing Nov. 26 at the Will County Jail in Joliet and faces spending the rest of his life behind bars.
Sources tell CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli that Peterson was taken to the Modell Funeral Home in Darien, where the visitation for his 84-year-old mother, Betty Morphey, was being held Thursday afternoon.
Peterson, in shackles and accompanied by jail staff, was allowed to spend 15 minutes with his mother, the sources said. Peterson's private viewing preceded the visitation for the public.
He was returned to Will County Jail later.
Savio's death was originally ruled an accident, but her death was reclassified as a homicide after an exhumation and a new autopsy, following the disappearance of Peterson's fourth wife, Stacy, in October 2007.
