Dominick's Closings Could Put More Than 5,600 Out Of Work
(CBS) -- There is grim news for people who work at Dominick's.
Safeway now officially says it could lay off more than 5,600 people when it shuts down the Dominick's chain in Illinois next month.
Owners notified the state that 3,224 people could lose their jobs in Cook County, and nearly 2,400 people in the collar counties surrounding Cook.
Four Dominick's stores were sold to the owners of the Jewel chain. Most employees at those stores are expected to keep their jobs.
There is hope many of the other 68 locations will be taken over by other rival chains before a Dec. 28 deadline set by Safeway.
A Safeway spokesman says the company will encourage buyers to keep Dominick's employees.
