Dog Survives Coyote Attack In Highland Park
HIGHLAND PARK (CBS) -- The Chicago region's coyote population is at it again, this time in north suburban Highland Park.
Police there are warning residents to supervise their children and pets after a resident reported one of her dogs was attacked by coyotes near a beach.

The resident said two adult coyotes attacked one of her two unleashed dogs near a private beach east of Lakewood Place, a neighborhood safety alert from Highland Park police said. The dog suffered only minor injuries.
Another resident reported a coyote followed her while she was walking her dog near Roger Williams Avenue and Sheridan Road, the alert said.
Residents, parents and pet owners on the southeast side of the city — an area bordered by Sheridan Road, Lake Cook Road, Lake Michigan and Roger Williams Avenue — are encouraged to exercise caution to prevent similar incidents.
Parents of younger children and pet owners are asked to make sure they are adequately supervised. Pet owners are also reminded that dogs need to be leashed on public property, the alert said.
Coyotes are usually afraid of humans but hunt small animals to survive. Coyote activity is common near forest preserves, secluded areas and golf courses, the alert said.
Last month, a Wheaton resident reported that her small dog was attacked in her yard. The resident heard yelping and scared off the coyotes, and the dog survived. The west suburb has had similar incidents occur in recent years.
Chicago has even had its share of coyote sightings. Last month, one of the animals was rescued from icy Lake Michigan. Firefighters named her "Holly"; the coyote was expected to be released into the wild.
