Dog Rescue Worker Julia Ferrel Remembered
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Cancer has claimed the life of a tireless rescue worker who saved more than 200 animals over the past 8 years in the Chicago area.
As WBBM Newsradio's Pat Cassidy reports, Julia Ferrel, 55, died of cancer on July 24. Her sister, Sue Malone, tells the SouthtownStar that most of Ferrel's rescues were dogs, and it didn't matter when or where – if someone called, Julia ran to them.
Malone tells the SouthtownStar she remembers her younger sister crawling along railroad tracks searching for a lost dog or how she'd make and post fliers everywhere for a missing pet.
Ferrel wrote a column called "Paw Prints" for the Journal News and City NewsHound in the Garfield Ridge and Clearing neighborhoods but was also well known throughout the southwest suburb, the newspaper reported.
She leaves behind a husband, three children, 5 grandchildren and countless animal success stories, the SouthtownStar reported.
