Dog Dead, Woman Hospitalized In Mount Prospect Fire
MOUNT PROSPECT, Ill. (CBS) -- A dog is dead and a woman is hospitalized following an apartment fire in Mount Prospect Wednesday night.
Just after 9 p.m., a man and woman returned to their second story apartment in the 1700 block of Forest Cove Drive, and found the kitchen on fire, according to Mount Prospect Fire Chief John Malcolm.
They were distraught because their three dogs were inside but called 911 and exited immediately.
"Two of the dogs we were able to save, but one of them died,'' Malcolm said.
The entire 12-unit, three-story building was evacuated and crews began working on the fire, extinguishing it in about 10 minutes. The cause of the blaze is not suspicious and authorities believe it started in the kitchen area, though it was not immediately known how, the chief said.
The woman, in her 30s, was taken to Northwest Community Healthcare in Arlington Heights to be checked for possible stress-related injures. She was not burned and did not suffer smoke-related injures, the chief said.
The apartment unit and the one below it were rendered unlivable and those occupants will be staying with family. The rest of the building's residents were allowed back inside, Malcolm said.
No fire code violations were found and the "non-sprinkler" building was equipped with smoke detectors.
The blaze caused an estimated $30,000 in damage, Malcolm said.
